'Taghill', Heanor, circa 1860
Heanor is a medium sized market town,
located in the East Midlands. Situated in Derbyshire, almost midway
between Derby and Nottingham, it has good access to both centres for
shopping and night-life.
"Taghill" is a small area of the old town of Heanor, and the map above
is the only one that I have found with Tag Hill marked as a seperate
area. There are varied accounts of its name:-
Being at the top of a steep hill from most directions, it required
another horse to be ' tagged ' onto coal wagons being pulled from the
local collieries
It is the last hill ' tagged' onto the southern end of the Pennines
In the 1800's, it was well know for bare-knuckle ' tag fighting '
